Those visiting the northwestern corner of Montana—and particularly Glacier National Park or Whitefish Mountain Resort—may be looking for a historic artsy mountain town in which to rest their weary bones. Located at the base of Big Mountain, Whitefish could well be that small town with its big heart and convenient location to accommodate visitors of the park, the ski resort and the area's lakes.
The town has welcomed visitors since the railroad first came through Whitefish almost a century ago and today's travelers looking for a place to rest at the end of busy days hiking, fishing and sightseeing in the summer or skiing and snowboarding in the winter will find a large range of accommodation. These include riverside lodges, bed and breakfasts, mountain condos and chain hotels and motels with choices that are luxurious as well as those that will put a little less stress on one's wallet.
WHITEFISH MOUNTAIN RESORT
Whitefish, sitting at the base of Big Mountain, is just a short 7 mi (11 km) away from the base of Whitefish Mountain Resort. Visitors for on-mountain outdoor activities such as skiing and snowmobiling, mountain biking, zip lines, hiking, snowmobiling and night skiing may wish to stay in the resort area. There are a several sleeping options on the mountain offering hotel-style rooms—all part of the the resort—including the Hibernation House, which features budget rates but has a hot tub and ski-in access in winter.
SPOKANE HIGHWAY / HIGHWAY 93
In the town itself, there is an extensive range of places to stay and most hotels and motels are located along Spokane Avenue, which is also Highway 93 that runs south towards the city of Kalispell, Whitefish's larger neighbor. Highway 93 is also the route towards Glacier Park International Airport and Glacier National Park. The airport is situated southeast of the town and services both Whitefish and Kalispell, as well as the national park. Those visiting the park for the stunning glacier-packed vistas, the glorious drive along the Going to the Sun Road or the challenging and varied hiking, but wanting the convenience and services of a sophisticated small town can opt to stay the short 24 mi (39 km) away in Whitefish.
Accommodations on Spokane Avenue include mid-range and budget chain hotels and motels as well as locally owned mom and pop-style stays.
